The Anglepoise® constant tension spring technology is a system invented a British designer George Carwardine in the 1930s. Formerly an automotive engineer, Carwardine used his extensive knowledge in car suspension systems to develop a revolutionary mechanism he adapted for lamp use. The Giant Floor Lamp was originally produced in an exclusive batch of three. One went to the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, one went on display at 100% Design and one went to auction at Christies – eventually being bought by film director Tim Burton. The Giant eventually went into large-scale production after the positive response it received at 100% Design. While the profile of this giant lamp aluminium arms come directly from its articulated design, other features display hints of period detail such as the deco-esque platform podium and industrial chic of its flexible domed shade. Originally a manufacturer of high-quality springs, it took automotive designer George Cawardine to show Herbert Terry & Sons that their future lay in specialist lighting.
