Il Kiosco

Il Kiosco is a new brand, born in 2014 from a brilliant idea by Susanna Castelli, a freelance designer completely devoted to innovation. The company is actually constituted of a tiny design studio based in Milan. There are not many products in the catalogue: these are limited edition posters representing a very original theme. The posters by Il Kiosco are inspired by a completely new vision of the modern and contemporary world and they "steal" their themes from the designs of bus stop signs, or from Milan's subway. Or sometimes they represent tram sides with their identification number, or the signs of tobacco shops.

The products by Il Kiosco
The items produced by Il Kiosco are very original, designed to give a special touch to any room of the house. The posters are printed on paper, strictly in Italy, and are the size of an A3 sheet: 42x29.7 cm. There are many colours available, but each poster contains only one or two colours. The simplicity and rigour of the industrial products are the source of inspiration of Il Kiosco's design. Despite the ultra-modern allure that flows from every single item produced by this company, in some ways its models are timeless, giving the impression that some parts of Milan have entered the house: in some ways these illustrations recall those of specialized magazines, or of those user manuals contained in all appliances.

The use of colours
For sure, what catches the eye at first when observing these posters are the colours which are always pure, simple and sharp. The simplicity of the illustrations, almost austere, makes these posters very versatile: even if they represent contemporary images, they are perfect for any room of the house. Even in the room with the most classic and antiques furnishings, a poster by Il Kiosco doesn't clash at all. Of course you can also use the posters to decorate an office or a professional studio; but they fit smoothly also in kitchen, living room or bedroom. Their ideal location, however, is within a contemporary décor to which they add a greater incisiveness.

The posters
The catalogue of Il Kiosco is not wide, it counts less than a dozen different illustrations. We are talking about limited editions and so, from 2014 to date, some products are out of stock and others have taken their place. The company only sells posters, while frames or other accessories must be purchased separately. Anyone who appreciates a product that is in the catalogue today, should immediately consider the purchase, because it might be finished even tomorrow. These posters are also ideal as a small gift, maybe already completed with the frame that better suits them.

The use of the interior decorations for the walls
Often you do not think about it, but completely empty walls are a real waste for those who like to furnish the house in a pleasant way: of course colour can help to make them part of the decoration, but certainly the use of posters, illustrations or paintings helps to broaden the perception of the surrounding space. With the posters by Il Kiosco you can give a different tone to any wall, including in the decoration of the home even the darkest and barest corner. The size of an A3 sheet is not huge, but it's enough to bring out these illustrations in a very clean way, making them perfect for any room. Try to hang a poster by Il Kiosco in the hall or in a corridor and you will notice right away its impressive impact.

The themes
Milan permeates every single piece produced by Il Kiosco: the Metro, the Streets, the Trams that travel fast across the city. Each poster contains a small piece of Milan, one of the most disputed cities of Italy. It seems strange to refer to Milan when it comes to art and culture, given that the majority of Italians consider it a metropolis with a merely economic and industrial face. But it's wrong: currently Milan is going through a constant cultural ferment which makes it very prolific and fertile. Anyone who loves Milan, and we are talking about a lot of people, can not do without a poster of this company which managed to encapsulate the essence of the city in just a few square centimetres of paper.

The simplicity
What characterizes every single product by Il Kiosco is its total simplicity: each picture is clean, straight and sharp, as if it were instructions for a user manual of the city of Milan. Despite these features, the emotional impact of the posters is strong: simple designs that recall a world with few lines and primary colours. Not all products are dedicated to Milan, you may also find some pieces that we could call "generic", inspired by emergency exit signs, or the alarms present in large urban complexes or even the signs indicating the distribution points of the state monopolies. The theme changes, but the substance remains the same: it's an illustration from everyday life represented on paper to get inside the house, as a decoration. We are talking about a kind of art that is inspired by objects that have nothing artistic in them: these objects are just ennobled by the fact that someone decided to illustrate them. The concept is definitely not new; what's new are the subjects chosen to be transformed from ugly and sad "signs" into beautiful and original posters to be used to decorate the house with a witty and modern touch.

How you use the posters
The posters by Il Kiosco need to stay on their own: they can't be combined with each other, because they will constantly fight to have the whole scene. Of course it's possible to buy as many posters as you want, even all of them, but then they must be inserted in the right space, alone, or however far from each other and from other posters or pictures on the walls.
