Lars Rank Keramik is a company that produces hand-made pottery items individually and in accordance with an artistic tradition that recalls the typical themes of the Nordic style, combined with a touch of oriental tradition. Lars Rank Keramik has its headquarters in the workshop of Vesterbro, in Copenhagen, and its products are exported throughout Europe and the rest of the world thanks to the retailers present in every continent.
Who is Lars Rank
Rank Lars is a young potter, graduated at the Jutland Art Academy (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in Denmark in 2001. Lars Rank decided to devote himself to manufacturing art after working on several projects between art and design, always seeking new and cutting-edge solutions. Since 2004, following the idea that ceramics play a key role in contemporary art, Lars Rank has specialized in the design and manufacture of high-quality ceramic products for the home. It was the training experience carried out in 2005 in Japan at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park to bring out even more awareness of the importance of this valuable material in the segment of household items. During this stay, which lasted four months, Lars Rank has got to know thoroughly the traditional Japanese pottery, which since then has deeply influenced its creativity. The work of Lars Rank, despite the oriental influences, has its roots in the Scandinavian design tradition. All its products are handmade through the fusion of porcelain: a process that requires precision and dedication. His pieces have clean lines accentuated by eye-catching and original decorations. The design process consists of a deep interaction between the ceramic material and the idea: each work is characterized by some unique details, so that every element is different from the others. Lars Rank does not simply want to give shape to ceramic, but he wants to provide a framework in which materials can take on new perspectives and dimensions in order to create a piece like no other. All the little variations made by Lars Rank make each product a unique artwork to be exhibited or for everyday use.
Projects, exhibitions and awards of Lars Rank Keramik
In 2007, Lars Rank Keramik began a successful collaboration with the writer Tomas Lagermand Lundme, which led to the fulfillment of a project called 'You little teapot'. It consists in a platform that aims at promoting interdisciplinary interaction, where art and crafts are placed at a very high level. The philosophy behind this project originates from a desire of changing the world view: vases of all shapes and sizes that express a radical intervention on all the most discussed issues, from sexuality to politics up to everyday life. The texts are written by Tomas Lagermand Lundme, while the pots are hand-made by Lars Ranks, recognizable by the abstract and often brave colour patterns. The figurative line is based on the texts and vice versa, in a merge of high artistic conception. Each vase is a thought, every thought is represented by a form: the result are the different modes of expression of a concept through an object, the bearer of ideas and political trends. According to this view, the vase is to Lars Rank a real statement of intent, a form of empathy and narrative. Since 2008, the project of the two artists had a great visibility thanks to the selection of the four collectible jars at 'The International Ceramic Festival' held in Mino, Japan. In the same year, Lars Rank has participated in the exhibition 'Evergreens - Grethe's Grandchildren' organized in honour of the famous Danish jazz singer Grethe Ingmann, which was held at the Rumkammerat, in Copenhagen. On this occasion, Lars Rank has presented a series of vases inspired by the troubled life of Grethe, especially related to the conclusion of her artistic reputation. It was in January 2009 that ‘You little teapot' began to deal with minorities, with the participation in the exhibition ‘I'm afraid of Denmark', at the Raca exhibition space in Copenhagen. In 2009, Lars Rank took part in a group exhibition titled State of Emergency, based on the vision of China as a cultural phenomenon and political power from the perspective of everyday life experienced by the Danes. The exhibition, organized on the basis of a common artistic study of Chinese history and, especially, of the Tiananmen Square massacre, took place at the Overgaden in Copenhagen, where Lars Rank has presented a number of vases on the topic. ‘You little Teapot' also took part in the exhibition "Far out in the forest" organized by Designer Zoo in the autumn of 2011, where he exhibited a selection of his best works. In 2012, Lars Rank Keramik received the Design Awards for best artisanal design at the annual exhibition sponsored by the Danish magazine Bolig Magasinets. In 2013, Lars Rank took part in the project HITS Luxury and Stylish Home, an exhibition of objects and tableware promoted by the Royal Danish Embassy in Moscow. On this occasion all companies specialized in the creation of elegant and refined tableware were presented at the Danish National Stand at the International Motor Show. Lars Rank Keramik obtained a broad recognition linked to the merits of a versatile artist attentive to design and this has allowed us to promote the brand even more.
Lars Rank began a visual artist and explored widely the area of the encounter between art and design. The added value of the Lars Rank Keramik brand is in the uniqueness of his works: it is not possible to find two identical pieces and also the colours used are always varied, different and special for each object.
