Man has been decorating his homes ever since the first men took refuge in the caves, whose walls painted animals and hunting scenes, for a purely propitiatory reason. Starting from those remote epochs, man continued to appreciate the decorations, figurative and not, even inside his dwellings. Even today you can admire the frescoes of the ancient houses of Crete, or even those of the Roman domus: the motives are varied, often attended by the most famous legends or the common scenes of everyday life. No matter what the painted scenes depict, man-made mansions always contain purely decorative elements that allow to embellish any environment. Over time, decoration methods have changed a lot, and stickers and wall stickers are born from the earliest decorations of the early men's caves. Today, the desire to propitiate the hunt is totally matched, so the most popular decorations have a mere aesthetic meaning. Stickers and wall stickers are increasingly popular in recent years as if they were new to the moment. They actually sink their roots in widespread practices even some decades ago. An ancestor of vinyl stickers are definitely the stencils of the templates that, applied on the wall, allow you to paint the same drawing several times, in series. The mask moves along a wall to create an entire Greek of colorful leaves, in many cases with a simple and repetitive style. Stencils are not a modern invention, as they were used in the past; what changes are the themes of the drawings and the material of which the stencils are made. Even the frames of the oldest frescoes were produced with this simple technique.
In addition to stencils, stickers and wall stickers have two other ancestors, ie paper stencils used by large companies and wallpaper. One time, at the dawn of serial production, many companies painted their logo or owners names on every item manufactured by hand. Over time, production numbers continued to grow, and industrialization required more speed and perfect reproducibility of each item. Handwritten writing, with a brush and paint, became overly slow and unworkable to accomplish. It was for this reason that the stencils began to use, just like the ones used on the walls. Just lay the template on the object to be painted to get a perfectly executed logo within seconds. Some companies began to prefer paper sheet stencils that were glued to the product or placed under a layer of paint to make them very durable. The first labels were born in the eighteenth century, as an alternative to stencils. Besides being inexpensive, they could be serially printed, ready for the industrial system that was emerging. Both the techniques, the stencil and the sticker, were increasingly being developed thanks to the spread of the advertising products: a growing number of companies began to use billboards of all kinds to make their name known worldwide. Delivering a sticker to a customer meant increasing their popularity everywhere, as they did some beer brands with their classic coasters. The stickers became especially widespread especially in the '70s and' 80s, when advertising became widespread throughout the world; some people even collected stickers, paper or plastic. Many little boys at that time were trying to grab the stickers of the major brands advertised by TV, and then used them to customize their everyday items, such as the school backpack or the door to their bedroom. Initially, the use of stencils was enormously diffused thanks to the use of this technique by a certain trendy counterculture, that of the graffiti, who began to use this method, especially in the streets of New York. For a person who deals with a street art form that many are considered a vandalous act, using a stencil is a kind of revolution. Often the graffiti are forced to paint their artwork in seconds, at night, always alert to the arrival of law enforcement. In this sense, the stencil allows you to create many drawings in a few moments without having to sacrifice beauty or originality. Through the popularity of many internationally renowned writers, the stencil has also come into the decoration of homes - a simple template that allows you to create pretty complex designs that are difficult to achieve in a short time.
