This "Moka Alessi", for 6 people, and is a tribute to my maternal grandfather Alfonso Bialetti who in the years' 30 of the XX century & deg; and is he was the inventor, the designer and the first producer of "Moka Express", the popular Italian espresso coffee maker. Octagonal, with a shape inspired by futurism and art d & egrave; co, made of die-cast aluminum, Moka and is became an archetype in its merchandise category earning grandfather an undying reputation as a designer who probably did not look for it. I have often wondered about the reasons that have made this small home object an exemplary phenomenon of Made in Italy, which has also recently become an example of Italian proto-design. La Moka is and is inscribed indelibly in the collective memory of the Italian public (but not only). He has formalized a new contemporary, intimate and homely ritual. With the reassuring rumbling of coffee is when it is produced on the gas flame has established a link with the imaginary of the public that will continue is to repeat each morning in fashion, today prevailing on the market, of the new electric coffee-makers with pods and capsules. In our history we have already is addressed the theme of espresso coffee maker with projects created by great designers: Richard Sapper, Aldo Rossi, Michael Graves, King-Kong, Piero Lissoni, Wiel Arets and designed for the high end of the market. This time, however, I asked Alessandro Mendini (with whom I was discussing this issue for at least twenty years) to give birth to a new Caffettiera project trying to put himself in the shoes of his grandfather and to interpret his brilliant invention through more 39; aware of the levers of contemporary design: with the big news is to keep a popular price, exceptionally popular for an Alessi product. Espresso coffee maker in aluminum casting. Handle and knob in thermoplastic resin, black. Discover the other products in the A collection of Alessi online.

Alessandro Mendini
Alessandro Mendini

Alessandro was born in Milan in 1931 and graduated in 1959. He is an architect, artist, designer and design manager, theorist and journalist and began his profession at the Nizzoli studio. In 1970 he gave up planning to concentrate on journalism relating to architecture and design: He has edited Casabella, Modo and Domus through which he has transmitted his ideas of renewing the world of design. Along with Branzi and Sottsass and with his presence in Global Tools and Radical design, he was the main force behind the renovation of Italian design in the 80's. In the late 70's he went back to designing and various projects and in 1979 joined the Alchimia Studio. This group of radical designers in the 80's in Memphis had upset functionalist designers by designing objects for sheer artistic pleasure and by referring to popular culture and kitsch. This was well outside the norms of industrial production and practicality. With Alchima he created objects, furniture, environments, paintings, installations and architectural works. Among his most significant works during this period were the Groningen Museum and the reinvention of the Alessi image for whom he is meta-projectual consultant. In 1989 he opened the Atelier Mendini in Milan with his brother Francesco and continued his career as a sophisticated, pop designer. The key element is always a clever hybrid between art and design resulting in popular objects that achieve great commercial success.
