This week I read:
Never stop designing spaces.
An Emotional Journey Through Ten Places of Italian Life
Daniele Lago
Rizzoli, 2017 / 176 pp. / Hardcover
EAN: 9788817093484
If there’s something Italians love, it’s their home. If there are two things they are famous for, it’s their landscape and the history of their towns. And their food, obviously.
The project by LAGO, illustrated by Daniele Lago in the book Never Stop Designing Spaces, brings together these aspects in a physical dimension, interiors, which is however not an end in itself: it has to do with emotions, to quote the title, because we are talking about spaces that speak – to the people that inhabit them and to the surrounding environment.
Interior decoration is purely aesthetic: it enhances a space and follows an inspiration or a trend. However, interior design is part aesthetics and part function: this is the field LAGO moves in, trying to find that delicate balance which makes spaces come alive and seem not only inhabitable – but a pleasure to live in.
Never Stop Designing Spaces is a journey through ten different Italian cities, ten spaces, ten extremely different scenarios, and ten tailor-made projects by LAGO. Assisi, San Gimignano, Lucca, Matera, Napoli. Sorrento, San Vito Lo Capo, Vicenza, Livigno, Torino: private homes, kitchens, living rooms, hotels and cultural centres become an integral part of the surrounding city and, at the same time, their finishes, spatial planning and details shape the city and help us discover it.
The book is a perfect guide to understanding how our heritage, Italian heritage especially, is not something to assume passively, but fertile ground for dialogue, fusion and producing new solutions. It shows us that a liveable space is always the result of an intentional design, though perceived as natural and indigenous. Worth a read.
