Prove yourself: the latest design competitions to take part in

We’ve found some design competitions that could be just what you’ve been looking for, whether you want to prove yourself or you’d like to have your project funded and in production.

A logistics revolution with Toyota

deadline: October, 22nd

This design competition promoted by Toyota focuses on shaking up the field of logistics management, and it’s especially aimed at design students or recent graduates.

Is it possible to reinvent the standard shipping and delivery chain? Does the future lie in shipping directly to the customer? Toyota is asking all competition entrants to try and find an answer to these questions, trying to understand how they would optimize the last shipment phases, designing a quick, sustainable and above all ground-breaking logistics solution. You’ll find all the relevant details on the website.

There are three prizes to be won, the first prize is worth 5.000€, the second 3.000€ and the last 2.000€. Plus, the project that receives most votes from the public will win 1.000€. In addition, all winners will have a chance to be shortlisted for a six-month paid internship at the Toyota Material Handling Europe Design Center.

Make room for sustainability: Green Factor by Infiniti

deadline: October, 31st

The Italian furniture brand Infiniti is looking for new sustainable projects to manufacture and include in their next collection. This year’s design competition is called Green Factor, and it’ll run until the 31st October 2017.

What are the entry requirements? To be an architect or a designer under 35 years old, and to submit two complementary products – chair and stool or armchair and table – designed entirely out of timber, reducing or getting rid of materials, and reducing waste to a minimum. Go online for the competition guidelines.

The winners will receive 5.000€ and a chance to have their design manufactured and included in the Infiniti collection. The judging committee will include the architect Stefano Boeri, the director of interior design magazine Interni Gilda Bojardi, the founding partner of H-FARM Timothy O’Connell and the Sales&Marketing director of Infiniti Marco Ceccato.

Light in balance: L A M P contest

deadline: December, 15th

L A M P, in other words the Lighting Architecture Movement Project, launches the fifth edition of its lighting design competition. This design competition is open to students, emerging talents and established designers, who are asked to offer their own interpretation of balance.

The winner of each category will receive a cash prize and their entry will be showcased at L A M P 2018 in Vancouver (Canada), but there’s also a chance to win a professional photo shoot and to have your entry manufactured. The competition guidelines for students and other participants are available online. A great reason to take part is that Michael Anastassiades will be sitting on the judging panel.

A timber-framed sideboard: Riva 1920 takes you to the Saone del Mobile 2018

deadline: January, 31st 2018

Riva 1920’s design competition is also in its fifth edition. With “Accendi la tua idea” (lit. switch your idea on), this year Riva 1920 will ask all participants to design a timber-framed sideboard: the entries must be original, innovative and in line with Riva 1920’s production. Remember to check the competition announcement.

This design competition is open to both the under and the over 26 years old, who will be entered in two separate categories. Entrants can take part either individually or as part of a team, but they will only be able to enter one design. Six designs will be awarded prizes, three in each category, and they will receive respectively 1.500€, 1.250€ and 1.000€.

The winners of the past editions were celebrated at the Salone del Mobile. A great launching pad, don’t you agree?
