Our dialogue with companies and their designers continues, today we discover Rotaliana and a master who has translated light into objects since the late 1960s.

This is an opportunity to take a look at the "behind the scenes" of design and discover that the so-called inanimate objects, are not so inanimate after all...

Meet the Designer Paolo Rizzatto

In all Rotaliana projects there is an amount, small or large, of "illuminating" qualities capable of sensing and revealing new solutions for everyday life. A brand that works in respect of environmental and social sustainability, of the culture that feeds research and training.

Paolo Rizzatto founded in 1978 the company Luceplan with Riccardo Sarfatti, his products are included in the permanent collections of numerous museums and international foundations, he has achieved five gold compasses. Paolo Rizzatto thinks that design is simply the English translation of the beautiful Italian word "progetto" and that the project is a cognitive process: designing means knowing what is being planned.

1.       Is there a precise experience, linked to your personal history, that triggered the love for design?

No trigger, rather I think there has been a long natural process which, starting from my early interest in the world of art through painting, sculpture, architecture, has wandered throughout my life from the scale of the city to that of the object.

2.       What processes are you interested in when designing?

I always try to take into account all the components involved without making one prevail over the other.

These are historical, typological, functional, usage, formal, technical, industrial, economic, commercial, ecological components. The relationships between the different components are complex in quality and infinite in number. I always look for the harmony of every single part and parts with the whole.

3.        If you were a material what would it be?

I really can't identify myself in a single material…. Do you know Woody Allen and his film "Zelig".... here I think I would have the same reactions.

4.       In terms of furniture, what does maximum luxury mean to you?

Give up appearance for substance.

5.       What do you think the world of design can do for this global pandemic?

We need to do what a good "project" must always do: be aware of the past, be an attentive and realistic observer of the present, imagine and propose a possible future.

6.       What is your relationship with uncertainty, chance, the unexpected?

For me they have always been related to all the design processes and I would say indeed that they contribute significantly to the charm of all creative projects.

7.       Which aspect of Rotaliana is the most exciting in stimulating your ideas?

Having found in the management and in the technical office a very reactive, intelligent and suitably proactive support group, it was easy to establish a direct, active relationship ... all this does not harm the beauty of the Adige valley and the Rotaliana plain.

9.        Squiggle is a collection of lamps with a unique signature, they contain a reminiscence: the amazement of a child in front of an installation by Lucio Fontana. The development of an idea often takes place through   hidden paths, the result of dialogue and confrontation with the company, or through personal and intimate processes. What is the path that led to Squiggle?

It was the "Neon structure for the IX Triennale di Milano" created by Lucio Fontana, that image has accompanied my entire life as a designer and occasionally came back to my mind. Today LED technology allows us to create a continuous free light in space. Rotaliana has been able to support the project of giving shape and size to that line, so as to make it a movable, sellable and usable product.

9.       What could your home not do without?

             The Wall to define it, the Roof to cover it, the Door to enter, the Window to observe.

10.     What thought for the planet can we find in your planning?

For some time I have been aware of the finiteness of its resources and therefore I have always designed and I still continue to design keeping in mind that man is not the protagonist of the great

show of the universe but only one of the actors even if the only one "conscious" of being one.
