Copernicus wasn’t making it up. His vision of the earth revolving around the sun along with the other planets is the same story told by dear old Aristarchus, the ancient Greek astronomer. But Copernicus took a step forward: by means of strict focus and mathematical acumen in an age of profound change, he turned Aristarchus’ idea into an unassailable reality.
Design too finds itself in a period of enormous and unavoidable change, especially in terms of technology. And here too there’s someone who believes in the importance of carrying out a small-scale revolution, by turning a philosophical idea into reality.
There’s an excellent Italian project that speaks this language: it’s The Human Light by design firm Artemide, an undisputed leader in the lighting sector and - above all - in technical innovation in lighting.
The concept behind The Human Light is pretty intuitive - as clear as the sun, we might say - or in this case, as a lamp. After millennia in which human activity has remained subordinate to and punctuated by the rhythm of natural light, today Artemide is exploring a light which follows the flow of human behaviour and emotions.
Italian design and cutting-edge technology create the perfect product to result in efficient and - above all - high quality performance. Artemide quickly understood the role of light in the perception of a room, and has worked with this in mind, creating light sources that change and adjust their intensity to suit the mood of all the inhabitants of a space, animals and plants included.
Once again, it all revolves around the human. Because there’s little in life so pleasant as coming home at night and being met by a warm and relaxing light that’s in tune with our mood and takes us far away from the blue screens of the workplace.
The Human Light is the philosophy that has guided Artemide’s designs for the past fifteen years. It’s an almost humanistic way of thinking, imagining and designing light, which allows the Italian brand to break free of perfection in technical performance and aesthetics, yet without ever sacrificing it.
