A straight line becomes a black stem supporting a bulb, the one represented by the spherical illuminating body. These are the words that best describe the essentiality, poetics and sophistication of the chrome-plated IC F1 lamp by Flos. The stem, with its linear shape and its right angle profile, is oriented towards a decidedly minimalist style, made up of squared and ordered objects. The lighting body, on the other hand, is a sphere 20 cm in diameter placed almost in the balance, wanting to recreate a more dreamy atmosphere and on the border with reality. Concreteness is based on imagination, linearity with curves. The intention is to give the idea of a circus object, to create the illusion of precarious equilibrium that leaves in the viewer the doubt "it will fall or it will not fall?". It is precisely the "contrast" the watchword of this lamp, also from the point of view of the materials. In a height of 135 cm, a width of 24 cm and a depth of 27.5 cm, the supporting structure is developed, simple and linear, represented by a chromed metal tubular element. On top of it is the sphere, in white opal glass, bright and elegant. The chrome-plated IC F1 lamp boasts the signature of the Cypriot designer Michael Anastassiades and stems from a somewhat visionary and decidedly modern concept of lighting the rooms. With its mix of styles, it adapts perfectly to any furniture, even though it is the perfect lighting device for modern and minimalist living rooms and bedrooms, especially when combined with the other elements of the collection. Leafing through the online catalog, in fact, it is possible to have an idea of how vast and varied Flos production is concerned with the IC F1 series of lamps, both in terms of size and type. In addition to the variant of the IC F1 floor lamp, from chrome to brass, you can purchase the IC F2 lamp, identical in design to the F1, the IC S1 suspension lamp and the IC T1 table lamp. Slightly different in terms of style, but equally matched to the IC F1 floor lamp, are the Ktribe floor lamp, which overlaps the stem with a more traditional shape, and the Stylos floor lamp, characterized by a slender cylindrical shape. Bulb not included.

Michael Anastassiades
Michael Anastassiades

Michael Anastassiades founded his London design studio in 1994. Schooled in industrial design and engineering at London's Royal College of Art and Imperial College – the Cypriot-born designer's lighting, mirrors, and tabletop objects reside between industrial design, sculpture and decorative art. Deceptively simple, yet meticulously detailed, they betray his training as a civil engineer and industrial designer. Anastassiades is particularly renowned for his lighting products, which comprise 80% of his studio's commissions. Shiny surfaces combined with simple geometric shapes like tubes, oblongs and spheres, articulate architectural spaces. He often chooses reflective materials – such as mirrored glass and polished bronze – that appear to dematerialise his objects, to float independently, interacting with the space surrounding them. Since collaborating with the architectural firm Studio Mumbai (2006), Anastassiades is increasingly working with some of the world's leading architects – including David Chipperfield and John Pawson – and interior designers such as Studio Ilse. His lights can be seen in hotels, restaurants and stores worldwide – including the Grand Hotel Stockholm, Soho House New York and the Sergio Rossi boutiques worldwide. Besides being commissioned and collected by private patrons and clients all over the world – Anastassiades has worked with many world renowned cutting-edge designers and prestigious manufacturers, including Hussein Chalayan (1997-8) Swarovski Crystal Palace (2004), Lobmeyer (2012) and Svenskt Tenn (2013). This year, he will be launching two 'families' of lights for Flos. Featured in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the FRAC Centre in Orleans, France, and the V&A Museum and Crafts Council in London, his designs have also been showcased at world-renowned galleries and arts organisations including London's Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Design Museum, Somerset House and Sotheby's; and Mitterand + Cramer in Geneva. Represented by the Nilufar Gallery in Milan – this follows the gallery's commission to create the ‘Lit Lines' series of lights (exhibited at Palazzo Durini in 2011) and the ‘Tree in the Moonlight' lamp which formed part of their Unlimited Collection (2012) .
