Interior lighting requires the introduction of furnishing elements that are able to blend with existing elements. At the same time, a characteristic that should not be underestimated is the ability of the elements that we insert to illuminate the environments in an appropriate manner. The great experience of the Flos brand, in designing luminous elements, gave life to the IC C / W1 lamp. Imagined by the Cypriot designer Michael Anastassiades, in the elegance of its lines, the IC C / W1 lamp allows us to play with light, allowing us to create our own personal interpretation of volumes and spaces. An elegant and sober stem in black steel, covered with a transparent varnish that emphasizes the shade, supports the lamp body wrapped in an opaline blown glass sphere, an essential and at the same time intense and evocative design. The set visually reminds the unstable balance of a soap bubble in the act of detaching itself from its origin. The black stem and the opal glass are able to merge into the many environments of life, never seem monotonous or obvious, finding their space also in daring combinations between ancient and modern. The glass lamp body, of generous dimensions, is 20 cm in diameter and is supported by an L-shaped brass stem 21.6 cm high and 25 cm long. The glass bulb remains firmly connected at a distance of 25 cm. No limit is therefore placed on our creative imagination. Powerful lighting will create intensely lit areas or areas with dimmer light. The possible fixing combinations, then, allow us an easy insertion both as wall and ceiling lighting, making the lamp suitable both for corridors and for generously sized rooms. The warm tone produced by the lamp type 205W E27, filtered by opal glass that creates a diffused light, is able to make the rooms at the same time welcoming and well lit. This lamp is therefore suitable for many applications, for games of light and shadow, able to make our living or work environments, unique and welcoming. Bulb not included.

Michael Anastassiades
Michael Anastassiades

Michael Anastassiades founded his London design studio in 1994. Schooled in industrial design and engineering at London's Royal College of Art and Imperial College – the Cypriot-born designer's lighting, mirrors, and tabletop objects reside between industrial design, sculpture and decorative art. Deceptively simple, yet meticulously detailed, they betray his training as a civil engineer and industrial designer. Anastassiades is particularly renowned for his lighting products, which comprise 80% of his studio's commissions. Shiny surfaces combined with simple geometric shapes like tubes, oblongs and spheres, articulate architectural spaces. He often chooses reflective materials – such as mirrored glass and polished bronze – that appear to dematerialise his objects, to float independently, interacting with the space surrounding them. Since collaborating with the architectural firm Studio Mumbai (2006), Anastassiades is increasingly working with some of the world's leading architects – including David Chipperfield and John Pawson – and interior designers such as Studio Ilse. His lights can be seen in hotels, restaurants and stores worldwide – including the Grand Hotel Stockholm, Soho House New York and the Sergio Rossi boutiques worldwide. Besides being commissioned and collected by private patrons and clients all over the world – Anastassiades has worked with many world renowned cutting-edge designers and prestigious manufacturers, including Hussein Chalayan (1997-8) Swarovski Crystal Palace (2004), Lobmeyer (2012) and Svenskt Tenn (2013). This year, he will be launching two 'families' of lights for Flos. Featured in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the FRAC Centre in Orleans, France, and the V&A Museum and Crafts Council in London, his designs have also been showcased at world-renowned galleries and arts organisations including London's Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Design Museum, Somerset House and Sotheby's; and Mitterand + Cramer in Geneva. Represented by the Nilufar Gallery in Milan – this follows the gallery's commission to create the ‘Lit Lines' series of lights (exhibited at Palazzo Durini in 2011) and the ‘Tree in the Moonlight' lamp which formed part of their Unlimited Collection (2012) .
