The Sciangai coat rack – a must by Zanotta that has received very important international awards. The Sciangai coat rack is one of the most iconic creations by Zanotta, a true excellence when it comes to Made in Italy design. This coat rack has a simple yet very special structure, both from an aesthetic and a practical point of view due to the way in which the object can be closed and reopened. The success of this piece is really exceptional. Designed by D’Urbino, De Pas, and Lomazzi, this coat rack has been produced by Zanotta since 1974 and it was only five years after its birth, in 1979, that the Sciangai coat rack won one of the most important design awards in the world: the Compasso d’oro, awarded by the Industrial Design Association. Among the various other awards are the 1978 Fiat Italian Design and the Ljubljana BIO 9 Prize. Furthermore, this piece is displayed in the most important Italian and international museums, from the Design Museum in Milan to the MoMA in New York. It is therefore clear that buying the Sciangai coat rack means bringing home a real piece of history as well as an element of remarkable aesthetic value. The name of this coat rack is not casual and refers to the famous oriental table game comprising of a set of 41 coloured sticks. At first glance, in fact, this coat hanger seems to faithfully reproduce the classic Shangai sticks in the moment before their disorderly fall on the table. As previously mentioned, this coat rack can be closed, a feature which makes it particularly practical. Made in oak wood, Sciangai is available in different colours.

In the 1960s, special attention was paid to the creation of furniture and temporary architectures, characterized by the use of advanced signs, materials and advanced technologies: they design and construct a series of pneumatic housing structures for the Italian Pavilion at the World Expo Osaka and for the XIV Triennale of Milan: in 1967 they realized with Zanotta the inflatable armchair "Blow". In 1972 they participated in the exhibition "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; Realize industrial and residential buildings and extend their intervention to the different areas of the industrial product: furniture and home and office equipment, lighting, electronics. At the same time, through the numerous exhibitions, including the exhibition "Italienische Möbel Design 1950/80" at the Stadt Museum in Cologne, experimental testing on the "border" design between architecture and design continues. In 1979 they received the Compasso d'Oro Award. Their works are featured in the design collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Center Pompidou in Paris. Their production is documented in the historical literature on Italian design and in the major international publications of architecture and industrial design: in 1977 the magazine Japan Interior Design devotes them a monographic number.
